On Tuesday 5th December, my wife and I visited Exeter. The guide book said that the Cathedral and Quayside were worth a visit. It pointed out that most noteworthy was the contrast between the redstone buildings surrounding the cathedral yard and the cathedral itself built with very light stone.

We arrived at the cathedral yard at about 12:30. My first impression was that I was visiting a garden centre. The beautiful cathedral was surrounded by what can only be described as a shanty town of garden sheds posing as a Christmas market. It was impossible to take any sort of photo of the cathedral without getting a garden shed in the foreground. Even the beautiful facade had an ugly igloo shaped shed in front of it. As for the contrast with the surrounding buildings, forget it. Having managed only one photo we decided to go inside. There we were confronted with a sign telling us that the cathedral was going to be closed to the public at 13:00, it was 12:42. We asked if we could still visit. Yes, but we would have to be quick and we were still charged half price. We managed to get round in 20 minutes, but as we reached the exit I thought I would get some photos looking down the aisle. As I was lining up my camera, an officious looking man confronted me and declared, “the cathedral is now closed for a private function”. “I have paid” I said. I looked at my watch and it was 13:02! “I would like to take this shot” I said. “Just one, then you must leave”, he snapped rudely. “So kind” I retorted sarcastically.

Leaving the cathedral I remembered the episode in gospel when Jesus cleansed the temple of traders and moneylenders at the passover. I wonder what Jesus would have thought of Exeter cathedral today and the unchristian behaviour of some of its staff.
